Art in class.

Los jugadores de naipes.
Francisco de Goya, 1789.

La gallina ciega

The teacher will show these paintings to the children, in which the topic is traditional games. It is a good way to show them how culture was in their country in the past. That will help them to be aware of the changes that have happened in their country. Making a comparison between how the came was in the past and how is it nowadays.

Now, all the children will play to “Gallinita Ciega” and “Cinquillo”. In the first game, one child will cover his/her eyes with a blinker and all the kids have to move around in order to be catch. If the “hen” grabs on of his/ her classmates, he /she would have to figure out who that person is. In the second game, the children will have to put the card number five on the table, and then they will have to follow the numbers up and down. The winner is the one that runs out of cards first.

"We´re going on a bear hunt" - Storytelling.

An activity that we have to do for practising storytelling, was to choose a book and tell the story to our schoolar friends.

For that, I have choosen a book that can be read, told or also sung: "We´re going on a bear hunt", by Michael Rosen.
I decided to tell this book for those reasons. Children enjoy it, because it has lots of movements. It´s really easy to memorise for the teacher because it has a repeated structure. This story has a repeated and short structure in which only change two or three words, the ones that are "new" vocabulary.  All the illustrations are good descriptors for ongoing the story and understand the vocabulary.

I will add here a link of a video from the writer of the story, telling it.

We´re going on a bear hunt, by Michael Rosen.

Storytelling (book dvd) "We´re going on a bear hunt".

Mr. Page´s Pet Shop.

In our handout, we have a little story about animals and the different sounds they make. For this story, we have also to prepare an activity, refered to animal sound. The ones that I have prepare were two:

By Jane Cabrera
  1. Reading "Old Madonald had a farm." by Jane Cabrera. As we know, this is a song as well, so we can hear first the song, what is easier for infants, and then read or tell the story.
  2. When we have a class with a low English level, we can only sing that song that I´ve found in the webpage "youtube.com".

Design a listening activity: before - while - after.

BEFORE-ACTIVITY:

Play twister game. We can work body and colours. Later, the teacher can add more difficulty to the game in order to use more than one part of the body. Also, if they work in groups and together, they have to put as many parts of their bodies as theacher orders in one unique colour.

It´s not the original one, that goes with the activities.

WHILE-ACTIVITY:

We plan this activity, talking from the point of wiev of the waitress. All the costumers are going to be describe.

  • Exercise: Complete the sentences circling the correct answer.
    • "Burmecians, have big heads and are very smart because, they are always listening".
    • "I have heard, that Bangass, always know what happen around them, that maybe, because in their heads they only a big, big eye!"
 AFTER-ACTIVITY

Complete the table.

ZOG - It´s an appropiate book?

ZOG

From our point of view, “ZOG” it’s a good book for five years old, when they learn English as a second language. Also, illustrations are really useful for four years old. Because, they explain the story really good, so they can follow the book.

The characters, as they are dragons, it increase creativity.

The plot, help to social and emotional development. At first, the Princess helps to Zog, because he gets damage, but finally they are friends. As well, children can feel identify with the characters because they are learning how to do thing at the school, they have a teacher…too. The end, it’s nice and different from the typical ending, because no one die.

As the vocabulary it’s a little bit difficult, we think that telling the story is the best way for the first time, because the adult can change vocabulary and grammar structures in a easier way.

Later, the book can be read. In this time, they can learn rhymes or repeated structures.

Resources for narrative.

In this webpage you can find lots of differents types of stories: stories and tales, audio stories, classic tales...and also, teaching with tales, that is realy useful. Most of the stories, are based in values.

I hope it will help you!!
